The Truth About Preschool Interviews

Here's the good news: preschool admissions directors aren't trying to trick you. They genuinely want to understand your family and see if there's a mutual fit.

What They're Really Looking For

1. Alignment with School Philosophy

Do you understand and support their approach? If it's a Montessori school, they want to know you're on board with child-led learning.

2. Partnership Potential

Schools want engaged parents who will participate in the community and communicate openly.

3. Your Child's Needs

They want to ensure they can meet your child's developmental needs and that your expectations are realistic.

Common Questions to Prepare For

  • "Tell us about your child."
  • "Why are you interested in our school?"
  • "What's your parenting philosophy?"
  • "How do you handle discipline at home?"
  • "What are your hopes for your child's preschool experience?"

Do's and Don'ts

Do:

  • Be authentic and honest
  • Ask thoughtful questions about the program
  • Share specific examples about your child
  • Express genuine interest in their philosophy

Don't:

  • Pretend to be someone you're not
  • Criticize other schools
  • Focus only on academics for young children
  • Forget to mention any special needs or considerations
